Is Jessica Simpson Finished with Country?
Jessica Simpson's foray into country music has come to an abrupt end. The 28-year-old's name mysteriously disappeared from Sony Music Nashville's Website today and a rep for the singer confirmed that her time with the country label has come to an end.
But was Simpson dropped from the label, or did her contract simply expire? After all, she wasn't exactly the most convincing country singer. After a string of performances where she sang off key and forgot words to her own songs, no one would blame the label for letting her go.
A rep for the pop turned country singer told CMT.com that her time with Sony Nashville always had an expiration date:
Jessica is and has always been an Epic artist. She was on loan to Sony Nashville for her country album. She continues to be on Epic's label."
Simpson has recorded a number of pop albums for Epic, but made the switch to country last year. She released her first country album, Do You Know, this past September, and it debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's country chart.
But Simpson was never really taken seriously by the country world. Despite spending the past year opening up for the country group Rascal Flatts, she has mainly been ignored by the country community. Her name was noticeably absent from this year's Academy of Country Music Award nominees, and she decided to skip the event all together.
Country music fans even seemed to dislike her, she was booed at her first concert, with one concertgoer telling Us Magazine, "She's an embarrassment to country music."
It's unknown whether Simpson will return to pop, but she told People in June that country was her thing and that the switch was permanent:
I'm planning on making country music for the rest of my life, and I don't want to go back to that other world... I take a lot of pride in my talent and in the record I was able to put together. I'm not giving up.
