7 Questions with Drew Barrymore
Who better to give romantic advice than the woman who married Tom Green? Drew Barrymore produced and stars in He's Just Not That Into You, a romantic comedy based on the popular dating guide for ladies and probably coming to a video store near you soon. There are four main stories of women dealing with different stages of rejection from their men. Barrymore plays a friend of many characters who interacts with all four storylines to blend the plot together, and give her a chance to sound off against MySpace pages and text messaging.
Zimbio: What did you think was the best piece of advice in the book?
Drew Barrymore: I think there’s something so great about your friends not coddling you, but being honest. You think that you’re helping your friend by making him feel better, when really, the truth will get them so much further in life. So sage wisdom about how to keep evolving in relationships is fantastic.
Zimbio: Since you're the producer, couldn't you give yourself a bigger part?
Drew Barrymore: I identified with that character. I worked with my partner, [Nanncy Juvonen], who is the producer, and also with the writers. I was in the middle of doing Grey Gardens and directing this film Whip It. There were just so many other great roles and so many awesome actors, I just wanted to step back. I liked my character. I wanted to make her the one who’s dismayed by technology. It was just a perfect fit for me. I really liked her, and everything happens organically for a reason. I felt like a Mary, my character.
Zimbio: Have you been frustrated by all this technology yourself?
Drew Barrymore: Oh my God, it’s the worst and I hate it. I wrote those lines. I worked with the writers. I miss Radio Shack. First of all, I love Radio Shack. I think for me that’s as high tech as I go. I mean it, because I love cassette tapes. They are the greatest. When you got a message on a tape you could save it. Remember the days when you could finally call in to check your messages? I miss those days; it’s too fast now. I think it’s very difficult on relationships and I don’t get it. I like patience. It doesn’t have to be so quippy all the time. It’s like running on a freaking treadmill, you can’t get off, and it’s exhausting.
Zimbio: What's the biggest no no for dating?
Drew Barrymore: No question: don’t not be yourself on that first date. Don’t sell them what you are not really about. It’s exhausting. I'm exactly who I’m being right now. I’m never not myself and I don’t give a shit if it’s to my detriment or not. This is who I am. What you see is what you get. I think when I was 13 or 14 and my entire life was out there, I didn’t have a choice. I thought, "Let me just ride with this wave." Just be yourself.
Zimbio: You'll probably be on Letterman promoting the movie. How have you kept that relationship special since you flashed him for his birthday?
Drew Barrymore: I think it comes from the fact that I’ve always been attracted to men with humor. When I was a kid I had a crush on him. When you get a childhood crush, it doesn’t go away.
Zimbio: Since you're so busy with three films at a time, producing and directing, how do you de-stress? What do you do to relax and chill out?
Drew Barrymore: Watch TV. I love watching television, Project Runway or Top Chef.
Zimbio: You must have a nice big movie star TV.
Drew Barrymore: I have an old big tube television. I hate flat screens. I love VHS, so I will not have a television that does not have a VHS player. I’m old school.
Zimbio: You know you're going to have to go digital this month.
Drew Barrymore: I’ll freak out. I’m like, "Hi-def, what?" I don’t want any of that. I like grain, I only shoot on film, I have no digital cameras. Film, film, film. I shot my film I directed on an anamorphic C lens package, which doesn’t even exist anymore. We had to go and find it. I’m really of the old school. I think there is an art to it. Did I say fart?
Zimbio: Do you do anything environmentally green?
Drew Barrymore: You should ask my best friend Cameron Diaz. She is such a good environmentalist. I have to further educate myself. Believe me, my best friend chases me around my house turning off all my lights, and she leaves me post-it’s saying, "How dare you!" She is teaching me.
