Lindsay Lohan lands first major film role since Samantha Ronson split

Lindsay Lohan has secured her first major film role since her split with girlfriend Samantha Ronson last month.

Lohan, who insists one of the reasons she ended her relationship with the DJ, was to to refocus on her career, will star in The Other Side alongside Woody Harrelson and Alanis Morissette, it's been reported.

The film tells the story of a university student who, while conducting a scientific study on a remote island, discovers locals are hiding a secret tragedy.

Napoleon Dynamite’s Jory Weitz, Diane Isaacs and Kent Harper are to produce the film.

The Other Side will mark Lohan’s first major appearance on the big screen since 2007’s I Know Who Killed Me, which was mostly panned by critics.

The film also won eight Golden Raspberry Awards, including Worst Film and Worst Actress.

While away from cinema, 22-year-old Lohan has endured a turbulent two year period in the public spotlight, which has included repeat visits to rehab.

But director David Michaels told entertainment publication Variety that he believed the film would showcase Lohan's fresh determination to restablish herself as an actress again.

"Lindsay's very aware of people's perceptions of her,” he said. “She's really committed to doing what she has to in order to change that."

Shooting on The Other Side is expected to begin this October on an island off the coast of Massachusetts.
